Video: How to Stay Healthy on Set

In this video, student vlogger Lucia offers some advice on how to stay healthy while on a college film set.

For Theater and Film majors working on college sets, the workday can be as long as 10–12 hours. During this time, you have to work hard and be on your feet all day. That’s why Lucia stresses the importance of staying healthy and gives tips to make these long hours a little more manageable. Check out the video below!

Eat breakfast

Sometimes you get called on set before the dining hall is open. Make sure you keep some snacks in your dorm or know of a 24-hour Starbucks, because breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Bring a water bottle

You’re on your feet all day on set, and it’s much easier if you have your own water. Your energy levels will be higher if you stay hydrated.

Eat lunch

Eating lunch is also super important to surviving the long hours on a film set. Even if you don’t take your break and want to work through it, see if a friend can go and get you food.

Wear sneakers

Comfortable shoes will make being on your feet for long hours much more doable.

Bring blotting sheets

Lucia says a set can get super hot and your skin can get greasy, so if you blot your face, you’ll feel a little less icky.

Remember to go to the bathroom

It is understandable that you don’t want to miss anything important on set, but going to the bathroom is a higher priority! It’s okay to take a few minutes to step away and refresh.

Wear gloves

Gloves are important, especially when you are dealing with lights that become really hot. Wearing gloves will help you avoid getting burnt.

Make a dinner plan

Lucia gets home from set as late at 9:00–11:00 pm, meaning some of the dining halls are closed. Keep dinner options in your dorm so you don’t skip out on another much-needed meal.

Don’t overextend yourself

You have a lot going on in college, but school and your health should come first. Only crew a set as much as you can handle, because balancing everything will help you in the long run.

Starting the college admissions process as an international student was daunting. Thankfully, CollegeXpress was the first website I used for that cause and it helped me so much, from knowing where to start to deciding what my next move would be. I'll take a gap year, but I’m certainly using the website again when applying for fall 2023.

I want to sincerely thank you all for this amazing website that's legitimately helped me find so many different scholarship opportunities. I've been stressing out for the longest time about paying for college since I would rather stay out of debt and have been working days trying to find any scholarship opportunity. When I found CollegeXpress, I discovered many easy scholarships that have given me hope for the future. Thank you and God bless!

Being a sophomore in high school, I never really worried about college. I thought it wasn't important to worry about until senior year. Through this program opportunity I came across, I realized how important it is to start looking at colleges early and start planning ahead. CollegeXpress has opened my eyes to what colleges require, what colleges are near me, and what they offer. The daily emails I get from CollegeXpress really help me look at the different options I have and what colleges I fit into. Without this website, I would not be taking the time out of my day to worry about what my future will be nor what opportunities I have. I could not be more grateful for such an amazing and useful website. It's thanks to CollegeXpress that not only me but my family now know how much potential I have in to getting into these colleges/universities that we thought were out of my reach.
